Builders Vision Acquires Stake in Hatch Blue to Scale Sustainable Aquaculture

Builders Vision, the investment and philanthropy platform founded by Lukas Walton, has taken a minority General Partner stake in Hatch Blue, signaling growing institutional confidence in aquaculture as a core component of the global food system.

The investment marks a significant expansion of a relationship that began in 2017. Builders Vision has supported Hatch Blue across its investment, consulting, and venture-building activities, including as a limited partner in the Blue Revolution Fund.

This GP-level commitment represents a deeper strategic alignment between the two organizations.

Hatch Blue operates as a global aquaculture investment platform headquartered in Cork, Ireland, with additional offices in Norway, Germany, and Singapore.

The firm integrates capital deployment, technical advisory services, and innovation programs to support the growth of sustainable seafood systems worldwide.

Why This Investment Matters for Sustainable Seafood

Aquaculture is the world's fastest-growing food production system.

The global market was valued at approximately $310 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $417 billion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate of roughly 5%.

More significantly, farmed aquatic animal production has now surpassed wild capture fisheries globally. By 2030, the sector is expected to reach 109 million metric tons in production, representing a 32% increase over 2018 levels.

Despite this scale, the sector has historically lacked specialist investment platforms capable of combining capital, technical expertise, and ecosystem development.

Who Is Builders Vision?

Builders Vision manages over $15 billion across multiple asset classes, focusing on three sectors: food and agriculture, energy, and oceans.

The Chicago-based platform employs nearly 100 people and deploys capital through direct investment, philanthropy, and fund investments.

Lukas Walton, the grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton, established the platform in 2017 to deploy long-term, patient capital toward systemic change in sectors critical to environmental and human health.

In 2014, he founded S2G Ventures with an initial $100 million fund focused on sustainable food and agriculture. S2G has since grown to manage $2.5 billion across more than 100 portfolio companies and launched as an independent registered investment adviser in May 2024.

Walton was named to the TIME 100 Climate Leaders list for investments aimed at delivering both environmental and financial returns.

Builders Vision has distributed nearly $700 million in philanthropic capital, with over $140 million directed to Chicago-based organizations. The platform's approach combines investment, grantmaking, and advocacy to address challenges across its focus sectors.

Hatch Blue's Investment Model
