Direct air capture of CO2 to clean up our atmosphere.
Carbyon is creating a low-cost, mass-scale direct air capture solution to harvest carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The company uses a unique fast-swing thin film technology to capture CO2 from ambient air, making them the only Direct Air Capture company utilizing this particular approach.
The company was founded in 2019 by Hans De Neve in collaboration with TNO and other stakeholders in the Brainport Eindhoven region. The founding story began with a serendipitous discovery in 2010 when De Neve accidentally created a highly porous material while searching for new materials to boost solar panel efficiency, which he later realized could be used for direct air capture.
Carbyon aims to reach gigaton scale carbon removal and fundamentally transform the global energy and materials economy through their atmospheric CO2 harvesting technology. Their work addresses the critical need for carbon removal solutions, as there can be no net zero emissions without actively removing CO2 from the atmosphere. The company serves multiple markets including controlled environment agriculture, sustainable fuels, and carbon dioxide removal, positioning themselves as a key player in reversing climate change.
Carbyon creates impact by developing affordable, scalable direct air capture technology that removes CO2 directly from the atmosphere, addressing the fundamental challenge that net zero emissions cannot be achieved without active carbon removal. Their business model focuses on harvesting atmospheric carbon and converting it into useful applications across controlled environment agriculture, sustainable circular fuels, and carbon removal services.
The company's technology aims to fundamentally transform the global energy and materials economy by providing a circular source of CO2. By making direct air capture cost-effective and deployable at mass scale, Carbyon enables industries to access atmospheric CO2 as a raw material while simultaneously cleaning the atmosphere.
By 2031, Carbyon plans to scale up manufacturing capacity to 50,000 systems per year with each system having a capacity of 50 tons. Their ultimate goal is to reach gigaton scale carbon removal by 2050 to reverse climate change.
