Send money directly to people living in poverty.
GiveDirectly is a nonprofit organization that allows donors to send money directly to people living in poverty with no strings attached. Their approach is guided by rigorous evidence of impact and core values of efficiency, transparency, and respect, enabling recipients to choose how best to improve their own lives.
Since 2009, GiveDirectly has been committed to accelerating the end of extreme poverty globally by shifting power to people living in poverty. The organization recognizes that people in poverty are experts in their own lives and deserve the dignity to make their own choices about what they need, when they need it, and how to use aid.
GiveDirectly has delivered over $1 billion in cash directly to more than 2 million people living in poverty across multiple countries including DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States. Their work is trusted by over 160,000 donors and recognized by evaluators like Charity Navigator and Charity Watch for efficiently delivering the maximum share of each gift directly to families in need.
GiveDirectly's business model creates impact by directly transferring cash to people in poverty without restrictions, allowing recipients to invest in what they determine will best improve their lives. This approach shifts power away from traditional aid models that decide for people what they need, instead empowering individuals to make their own choices and investments.
Research shows that recipients use cash aid in impactful and creative ways, spending on medicine, livestock, school fees, solar panels, tin roofs, irrigation, motortaxis, and new businesses. Years later, these investments have raised incomes, lowered malnutrition, and grown local economies by as much as 2.5 times what was originally given.
Over $1 billion delivered in cash since 2009 to more than 2 million people living in poverty. In the last 12 months: 413,642 recipients paid, $167,824,747 delivered, and 229,276 total donations received. Local economies have grown by as much as 2.5x the amount given. Currently operating in 7 countries: DRC, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Uganda, and the United States.
